Ellen May Watterson Rohwer, of Sutherland, Iowa passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2022 reaching the age of 93 years, seven months, and twenty-seven days. Ellen was born December 16, 1928 in Ladysmith, Wisconsin; she was the daughter of Elmer E. And Mary I. (Gaynor) Steckel. Ellen graduated from Ladysmith, Wisconsin high school and later attended Minnesota Bible College for over two years. Ellen was a life-long learner and follower of Jesus Christ. She used her life as an example of being the Hands and Feet of Jesus by opening her home and heart to so many friends and family.
On June 14, 1949 she was united in marriage to Bernard E. Watterson in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. After their union, the couple made their home in Sutherland, Iowa. Ellen raised six children and gave piano lessons for several years in her home to many students. Ellen and Bernard loved camping adventures with their children, taking them to Prince Edward Island and the South Dakota Badlands. Bernard preceded her in death on June 3, 1998 in Omaha, Nebraska. Ellen remained in her Sutherland home and was united in marriage to Paul Rohwer on March 22, 2003. Ellen and Paul enjoyed their time traveling all over the country to visit friends and family. They loved exploring together, playing cards with their friends, and continued to learn and study the Bible. Paul preceded her in death on November 6, 2015.
Ellen’s faith and servant heart was at the core of everything she did. She was an active member of the Church of Christ in Sutherland where she played the organ for over 70 years. Ellen’s lifelong prayer was to tell everyone she met about Jesus and to share the joy of the kingdom of Heaven. She ministered with daily prayer and a huge heart to everyone she met. She shared her love with made-from-scratch meals and desserts, crocheted works of art, reading books to grandchildren and laughter-filled conversations. She loved being a grandma to all children and always had encouragement and a hug to give. Ellen’s beautiful heart only was set aside when Skip-O, UNO, Chasers or any card game came out… she loved to win against any family or friends! Ellen was also a member of the Christian Works and the Lamplighers of the church and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Sutherland. Ellen was a peaceful presence as a caregiver at the end-of-life for many who she loved: father and mother, husbands, and brother.
In addition to her parents, Elmer and Mary Steckel, Ellen was preceded in death by her husbands, Bernard E. Watterson and Paul Rohwer; daughter, Debra Lynn Yuysteke, grandson, Justin Watterson, and brother, DeWayne Steckel.
She is survived by her children, Darrell (Ginny) Watterson of Ray, North Dakota; David (Susan) Watterson of Hastings, Minnesota; Denise (Roger) Gellhaus of Omaha, Nebraska; Dawn (Ron) Feucht of Spencer, Iowa and Dale Watterson of Julian, California, 15 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren; her step children, Donna (Bill) Rohwer; David (Cecila) Rohwer; Ralph (Gloria) Rohwer; Lee (Marilee) Rohwer; 10 step grandchildren and 12 step great grandchildren, a sister, Mary Jane Evans of San Diego, California also other relatives and many friends that will miss her dearly.
