Frederick “Fred” Van Loh, age 94, of Sibley, Iowa and formerly of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at the Country View Manor in Sibley, Iowa. His family service will be Saturday, January 9, 2021 at Calvary Baptist Church in Sheldon with Pastor Bruce Branson and Pastor Zac Patke officiating.
A Graveside service will be Saturday, January 9, 2021 at East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon with a Flag Presentation by the McGlothlen – Cowie Post #145 of the Sheldon American Legion.
Visitation without the family present will be from 10:00am until 1:00pm on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.
The service will be livestreamed on the Calvary Baptist Church utube
Social distancing guidelines will take place
and Mask will be required for the visitation and the funeral

Frederick Alvin Van Loh was born, November 28, 1926 at home in Ashton, Iowa. He was the son of Jans and Fenna (Luitjens) Van Loh. He graduated from Ashton High School. Fred enlisted in the Army in 1945. After completion of duty, he attended SDSU in Brookings, SD for two years, then transferred to Iowa State University earning a Bachelor and Master’s Degree in Vocational Agriculture. He married Rose Helmers on July 28, 1950. Fred taught Voc. Ag in Correctionville, Iowa for one year, then taught Voc. Ag in Sheldon, Iowa for 38 years, retiring in 1989. Fred and Rose had two children, daughter, Linda (Steve) Killian of Valencia, California, and James (Rochelle) Van Loh of Sibley, Iowa.
Fred and Rose hosted mid-week Bible studies at their home in Sheldon resulting in the origination of Calvary Baptist Church in Sheldon. Fred and Rose are part of the original charter members. Fred served as president of Sheldon’s sunrise Kiwanis Club, also serving as Lieutenant Governor of several Kiwanis clubs of Northwest Iowa. Fred and Rose were very active in Right To Life of O’Brien County. Fred enjoyed reading to the kids at Children’s World in Sheldon.
After retirement, he often was a judge at surrounding county fairs, often in the horticulture events. He and Rose always grew a wonderful variety of flowers, particularly roses. A highlight of Fred’s career was receiving recognition in the Rose Garden of the White House for Sheldon’s FFA community betterment project.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Rose Van Loh of Sibley, Iowa; daughter, Linda (Steve) Killian of Valencia, California; son, James (Rochelle) Van Loh of Sibley, Iowa; grandchildren, Jonathan (Kim) Killian of Lake View Terrace, California, Amy (David) Studarus of Valencia, California, Rachel (Van Loh) Laux of Morris, Minnesota, Lyndsey Van Loh of Fort Collins, Colorado, Kelsey Van Loh of Mitchell, South Dakota; seven great grandchildren; sister, Marlene (Van Loh) Slykhuis of Sibley, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and two brothers.
