Greta Joyce Wildeman was born on February 11th, 1935, in Sheldon, Iowa, to Tony and Trina Noordhoek. After losing her mother at age five, Tony later married Josie Van Nyhuis, and together raised their family on their farm near Sheldon. Greta graduated from Sheldon High School in 1953. She was united in marriage to Arnie Wildeman on August 17, 1953. They were married for nearly 64 years, until Arnie’s passing in 2017.
Greta was a very talented artist, earning several honors and awards, including the prestigious Gold Key Scholastic Art & Writing Award as a teenager. She painted hundreds of oil and watercolor paintings from landscapes to portraits, still painting well into her 80s. She also enjoyed classical music, playing cards, board games, camping, and meeting friends for a good cup of coffee. Gretta was a lifelong member of the First Reformed Church, where she sang with a women’s group. She also volunteered for many years at the Christian Retirement Home.
Greta’s greatest accomplishment was her family, raising three daughters and three sons. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Greta passed away at Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn, Iowa, at the age of 91. Left to cherish her memory are her children Debi (Rany) Byers, Kathryn (Brian) Koele, Mark (Donna) Wildeman, Ruth (Mark) Wolterstorff, Randall Wildeman, and daughter-in-law, Laurie Wildeman; 13 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; sister Wilma Schnieder; close niece Robin; and many other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnie; son, Dennis; and infant son, Richard; sister, Margaret Reekers; and brothers Gerry, Bernard, and Paul Noordhoek.
Greta’s family wish to express their gratitude to the Prairie View Nursing Home staff for the loving care given to her during her stay.
