Jacquelyn “Jackie” Hohbach Wersinger
Jacquelyn “Jackie” Jean Hohbach Wersinger, daughter of Merlynn Sr. and Dove (Hoy) Callenius, was born February 4, 1930, on the family farm east of Hospers, in O’Brien Co., Iowa. She attended Baker #4 country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Hospers High School in 1947. Following high school graduation, Jackie enrolled in business school in Omaha, Nebraska, graduating in 1948 and working there as a secretary until 1953.
In 1951, Jackie met Floyd Hohbach of Granville, Iowa who was in the U.S. Army at the time. Following his honorable discharge in January 1953, the couple was married on May 24, 1953, at St. John Lutheran Church in Germantown, Iowa. For 31 years they farmed together near Granville, where they raised a family of five sons and two daughters.
After Floyd’s passing in 1984, Jackie went to Northwest Iowa Community College for computer training and again did secretarial work until 1987, when she met and married Leonard Wersinger. They moved to Sheldon, Iowa and later to the Iowa Great Lakes where both worked at Arnold’s Park Amusement Park for fifteen summers. Their winters were spent in sunny Arizona until 2009. On March 18, 2015, Leonard passed away and in 2016 Jackie moved to the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon, Iowa.
In March of 2024, Jackie entered Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn, Iowa. She lived there until the Lord took her home on Monday, December 22, 2025, reaching the age of 95 years and 10 months.
Jackie was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She always had a large garden and did a lot of canning and freezing fruits and vegetables. She had a love of animals and enjoyed all the horses, dogs and cats that were around the farm, raising some puppies and horseback riding. She also enjoyed dancing, bowling, playing cards and games, and traveling. She enjoyed meeting people and would always have time for a chat. Church and worshipping God were important to her, and she was a long-time active member of St. John and also at the other churches she attended in her various residences. She loved having her family all together. We especially remember her contagious laugh as she retold her funny stories!
Preceding her in death were her parents, husbands, Floyd Hohbach and Leonard Wersinger, a son, Brian Hohbach (2017), brothers Alvin Callenius, Merlynn Callenius, Jr., Ronald Callenius, Kenneth Callenius, sisters, JoAnne Koester and Nancy Meendering, six sisters-in-law, and five brothers-in-law, and, a step-grandson, Colt Wersinger.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Steven Hohbach (friend, Peggy) of Paullina, Iowa, Kevin (Kerry) Hohbach of Red Oak, Iowa, Laura (Kent) Lundquist of Paullina, Iowa, Dan (Kim) Hohbach of Hospers, Iowa, Roger (Stacie) Hohbach of Paullina, Iowa and LeAnn (Chris) Misterek of Pella, Iowa; her step-children, Denise (Roy E) Williams of Newton, Iowa, Keith (Sue) Wersinger of Bondurant, Iowa, David (Kelly Foreman) Wersinger of Cherokee, Iowa and Paul Wersinger of Ft. Dodge, Iowa. Jackie will also be lovingly remembered by her 14 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren, a sister, Karen (Robert) Jungers of Denver, Colorado, one brother, Wallace (Laurie) Callenius of Minneapolis, Minnesota, a brother-in-law, Calvin Meendering of Racine, Wisconsin, sister-in-law, Karen Hohbach of Crete, Illinois, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
