**In Loving Memory of Joel Edward Hellmann**
**July 24, 1948 – July 9, 2026**
Joel Edward Hellmann, 77, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. While our hearts are broken by his passing, we find comfort knowing he is now healed, whole, and in the presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ.
Joel married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Patricia, 58 years ago. Together they built a life rooted in love, faith, perseverance, and family. Their marriage was an example of lifelong commitment and unconditional love.
A proud veteran, Joel spent the majority of his working years at The Pack in Cherokee, Iowa, where he earned the respect of coworkers through his strong work ethic and quiet dedication. Retirement gave him the opportunity to enjoy the simple things that brought him happiness: spending time with family, sharing morning coffee with friends, casting a fishing line now and then, lending a helping hand to anyone in need, and keeping his lawn and hedges looking absolutely immaculate.
Joel's greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia; his son, Michael (Jessica) Hellmann; his daughter, Melissa (Chris) Sweeney; twelve cherished grandchildren; and twenty-three treasured great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Joel is also survived by his sister, Sheryl (Les) Fiddelke and also many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Nothing brought him greater joy than watching his family grow and knowing the values he lived by would continue through future generations.
Joel was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Viola (Dau) Hellmann, daughter-in-law, Wendy Baker, grandson, Brandon Schuknecht, and sister, Julene (Jon) Swenson.
Joel was proud of celebrating 47 years of sobriety. Through living the principles of the 12-Step program, he found purpose, strength, and peace, becoming an inspiration to many. His journey was one of courage, humility, redemption, and hope, and he freely shared those gifts with others.
Joel leaves behind a legacy of kindness, service, integrity, resilience, and unconditional love. He believed in helping others, showing up for the people he loved, and living each day with gratitude.
Although we will miss his steady presence more than words can express, we rejoice in knowing he has received the greatest gift of all—eternal life with Jesus. We can almost hear him saying:
*"I'm here on the other side waiting for you... but don't rush to get here. Take your time. Go make a story that's worth telling me when we meet again."*
Until that day, we will carry your love in our hearts, honor the life you lived, and strive to continue the legacy you so beautifully created.
Rest peacefully, you were deeply loved, and you will be forever missed.
