JOYCE E. SCHMITH
Joyce Elaine Schmith, the daughter of Ernest and Elsie (Koch) Meyer, was born November 23, 1940 in Cherokee, IA. She grew up on a farm outside of Calumet, IA and attended school at Calumet. On January 8, 1961, Joyce married Orlin D. Schmith of Paullina, IA. They lived for a time in Cherokee and then moved to Paullina, where they spent the remainder of their married life. They were the parents of one son, Gary. Joyce and Orlin (Smitty) enjoyed polka and old-time music and going to dances. Smitty passed away in August of 1998. Over the years, Joyce did childcare and cleaned houses and businesses in the Paullina area. She enjoyed holiday get-togethers with her sister Ardine’s family and going to dances with friends at the Paullina Legion. She was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ in Calumet. Joyce passed away on Wednesday morning, January 9, 2019, at the Baum Harmon Mercy Hospital in Primghar, IA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Orlin; her parents, Ernest and Elsie Meyer; and Orlin’s parents, Ray and Esther Schmith.
Those left to remember Joyce are her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Sandra Schmith; sister, Ardine Olhausen; nieces Cynthia (John) Barnes, Nancy (Randy) Plagman; nephew, Dennis (LeAnn) Olhausen; and seven great-nieces and nephews and their spouses and children.
Joyce was also blessed by the kindness and friendship of many Paullina-area folks who provided her transportation and helped her in many ways over the years.
The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall
not want. He maketh me to lie
down in green pastures; He leadeth
me beside still waters. He
restoreth my soul; He leadeth me
in the paths of righteousness for
His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the
valley of the shadow of death, I will
fear no evil; for Thou art with me;
Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort
me; Thou preparest a table before
me in the presence of mine enemies;
Thou anointest my head with oil,
my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall
follow me all the days of my life;
and I will dwell in the house of the
Lord forever.
