LEOLA J. HUMME
Leola Jean (Diekevers) Humme was born June 3, 1932, in Rock Rapids, the daughter of Walter (Ole) and Bertha (Kooima) Diekevers. She was raised in Boyden and attended Boyden Public School, graduating in 1950.
On June 8, 1951, Leola married John M. Humme. After John’s military service, they moved to the farm 1/2 mile east of Boyden, residing there for over 50 years. Leola was employed at Demco for over 20 years.
In September, 2008, they moved off the farm into Boyden. John and Leola spent many summers camping and enjoyed special friends and fellowship around the campfires at Oak Grove Park.
Family was very important to John and Leola. They enjoyed attending their family’s sporting and music activities. We all gathered around the kitchen table for many Sunday dinners. Some of her favorite things to do were quilting in early retirement days, watching Jeopardy, and doing word search puzzles. The kids and grandkids always requested her bread pudding and pies.
John entered the nursing home in 2014 and during this time, weather permitting, Leola spent every afternoon with him until his passing on March 30, 2018.
Survivors include three daughters and spouses: Laura and Dwayne Van Meeteren, Leila and Paul Moret, Lorraine and Daryl Egdorf. Five grandchildren - Amanda Haverhals, Ben, Jacob, Anna; Craig (Sarah) Van Meeteren, Harper, Logan; Mark (Crystal) Moret, Kinley, Maddox; David (Ashley) Egdorf, Kenna, Hallie, Jessa; Rachel (Matt) Jurgens, Emmett, Macie. Sister-in-law, Rosie Diekevers; brother-in-law, Jack Slykhuis; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lori and Bob Belsaas; nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
In addition to her husband, John, she was preceded in death by her parents, Ole and Bertha Diekevers; parents-in-law, Bill and Grace Humme; brother, Ed Diekevers; sister-in- law, Kathryn Slykhuis.
Blessed be her memory.
