LEORA L. EBEL
Leora Loreen Ebel the daughter of Edwin and Anna (Hinz) Shafer was born April 2, 1926 in Liberty Township, Cherokee County, Iowa. She attended Calumet, Iowa school before becoming a homemaker’s assistant for several of the relatives and was later employed at Lemke’s Food Store in Paullina. On August 18, 1946, she was united in marriage to Wilbert F. Ebel at the St. John Lutheran Church in Germantown, Iowa. After their marriage the couple farmed south of Germantown and Paullina before moving to the Shafer family farm near Calumet, Iowa. Leora kept busy raising her family helping Wilbert on the farm as well as canning, quilting, and tending to chickens. She was known as a good cook with the wonderful aroma in her home of freshly baked bread and buns. The couple retired from farming in 1989 and moved into their new home in Paullina in 1989. The couple were able to take many bus trips around the country and Leora enjoyed playing cards and flower gardening. Wilbert preceded her in death on June 2, 2011 in Spencer, Iowa. Leora had made her home at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley since 2010. She passed away there on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 reaching the age of 92 years, eleven months and twenty-four days.
She was baptized and later confirmed at the Zion United Church of Christ in Calumet and was currently a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary also in Paullina.
Leora is survived by three children, Dennis (Connie) Ebel of Hartley, Iowa; David (Pam) Ebel of Paullina, Iowa and Denice (Doug) Hicks of Lincoln, Nebraska; 10 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren, two sisters, Betty Alleven of Mapleton, Minnesota and Marlys (Orville) Tewes of Paullina, Iowa; also other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two grandsons, Travis Ebel and Lonnie Ebel; one brother, Wallace and one sister, Carol.
