LILLIAN GREEN
Lillian Bertha Margaret Goetsch Green was born January 12, 1931 to Ernest and Elsbeth (Siegert) Goetsch in Marietta, Minnesota. On February 8, 1931 she was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marietta. She attended Sunday School, confirmation class, and was confirmed on April 2, 1944. She attended public school. In 1946 she moved to Sheldon, Iowa (after her grandmother, who raised her, died). She graduated from Sheldon High School. She worked as a nurse’s aide at the Lutheran Hospital in Sheldon where she met RL (Bob) Green. They married August 12, 1949. God blessed them with two daughters, Janet and Pearl (Lee), four grandchildren; Elizabeth, Christopher, Janal, and Jason Moore; eight great grandchildren: Quinn, Alaine, Lorna and Niles Moore, Kaityn and Keith Davis, and Tori and Trey Moore.
RL and Lillian lived in Boyden, Iowa most of their lives and became involved in various activities. Lillian became a 4-H leader while her daughters were involved in 4-H. Nine years later, she opened a ceramic shop, Green’s Ceramics, where she taught classes. Her students came from all over the area, some from as far as Minnesota. She was a certified teacher and dealer by the National Ceramic Association. She also traveled and taught at other shops in the area and was invited to judge shows.
Lillian and her husband became involved with old car clubs and hosted “hobo stew” dinners for members of the clubs in their home. They enjoyed making new friends. Lillian and RL were also involved with the American Legion and Auxiliary. Lillian held the office of Unit President of Post 272, was elected Ninth District President in 1993, served on the State level on the Membership Team, and was elected to Community Service, Historian, and Chaplin. She volunteered at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls. She also volunteered at the Village Northwest Treasure Chest, she volunteered more than 2,000 hours of Bible studies at the Sanford Center and was named Boyden Citizen of the Year in 2003. Additionally, she was a 10 gallon plus blood donor with the American Red Cross.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sheldon where she served on the Church Council, as the President of the Women of the Church, and was involved in the Stephen Ministry. She developed a ceramic program for the Vacation Bible School where a child could complete a nativity set while attending Vacation Bible School.
Family is what she treasured the most. The converted school bus was where they camped together at Gull Point State Park, West Lake Okoboji, every weekend, they played together, and always worshiped together. It was a joy to see the girls grow both physically and spiritually and celebrate birthdays.
Left to mourn Lillian’s passing are her daughter Janet and her husband Al, her daughter Lee, grandson Christopher (Tiffany), granddaughter Janal (Paul), grandson Jason (Kelina); great grandchildren: Quinn, Alaine, Lorna, Niles Moore, Kaityn and Keith Davis, Tori and Trey Moore. Lillian is preceded in death by her husband RL, granddaughter Elizabeth, brothers Harvey (Verna), Ervin and Harold Goetsch.
