Marie (Alons) Vander Griend was born on January 5, 1928, to Ben and Maggie Alons on a farm near Sanborn, Iowa. She attended country school, Sanborn Christian School and graduated from Western Christian Academy in 1946. She attended Westmar College for ten weeks that summer and at the age of 18 taught 3rd and 4th grade at Orange City Christian School for three years “for $135 a month”. She married Sidney Vander Griend in November of 1949 and moved to a farm south of Sheldon. That was her home for the next sixty-two years.
Sid and Marie raised six children there. Marla (Jeff) Sverdlow of Bradenton, Florida, Harlan (Diane) Vander Griend of Sheldon, Iowa, Dave (Deb) Vander Griend of Wichita, Kansas, Dennis - Deceased (Lee) Vander Griend of Wichita, Kansas, Gene (Cindy) Vander Griend of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Steve (Mari) Vander Griend of Wichita, Kansas.
She was a prayer warrior for her family and enjoyed any time she could spend with her fourteen grandchildren and twenty-seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sid and her son, Dennis.
Marie moved from the farm to the Christian Retirement Home in October of 2011 and lived there for fourteen years. She was the resident who at the time had lived there the longest. When she realized she could no longer live independently at the retirement home she accepted the invitation to live with her youngest son, Steve and Mari in Wichita where twenty-six members of her family live. What a blessing to be cared for in the way she cared for so many others all her life.
Marie was a member of First Christian Reformed Church. She had a passion for Christian Education and Christ-centered ministries around the world. What a blessing to know that twenty residents of a mission Haiti elder home were praying for her in her final days.
Marie passed away at her son’s home in Wichita on August 5, 2026, with several family members at her bedside. We are certain she heard the words, “well done good and faithful servant”.
