MARK R. WILLIAMS

Mark R. Williams, son of Ensign and Axtel Williams, was born August 6, 1924 on a farm near La Porte City, Iowa. He passed away January 1, 2021 at Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon, Iowa. He received his education in a country school for the first couple of years, then at La Porte City Public School. He graduated from high school in 1943. He then enlisted in the Merchant Marines and served from 1943 to 1946. After being discharged from the Merchant Marines, he went on to become a foreman for a crew that repaired and painted water towers. While painting the water tower in Sheldon, he met Mary Ann Schnider who would go on to become his bride. He was drafted into the Army in 1949 and served in Korea. He received an honorable discharge in the fall of 1951. He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Schnider in Sheldon, and the couple moved to Waterloo, Iowa. After a few years, they moved to Sheldon and have lived there ever since. Mark and Mary had four children and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on October 29, 2016.
Mark worked for O’Conner’s, Verschoor, and D and H Motors as a body and fender mechanic. He loved fishing and would go every chance that he got. In his retirement he enjoyed woodworking. He would make beautiful clocks, shelves, children’s tables and chairs, and countless other items out of oak, which he and Mary would take to craft shows to sell. In later years, Mark taught himself how to use the computer and enjoyed keeping up with all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was always printing pictures of his grandchildren and great grandchildren and hanging them on his wall with pride. He went through a lot of ink! He had a passion for playing Farmtown on the computer, and he would always tell us how many farms he was currently tending or how many points he had compiled.
Every day in the summer when the weather was nice, he would take his scooter out for a ride. After his wife Mary passed away, he would make a stop at the cemetery to visit with her on his trip back to Senior Care.
Family meant everything to Mark, and he always enjoyed the times they could be together. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved them so much, and they loved him back.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church; VFW La Porte City, Iowa Post #3983; American Legion Sheldon, Iowa Post #145; Fraternal Order of the Eagles of Sheldon #2297; and was also a member of Prairie Queen Kiwanis. He volunteered at Village Northwest where he would help water the marigolds and deliver tomatoes.
Mark is survived by his son Joe (Sue) Williams of Sheldon, Iowa; son Mike (Donna) Williams of Spirit Lake, Iowa; daughter Deb (Gary) Glass of Sheldon, Iowa; and a son Pat (Penny) Williams of Sheldon, Iowa. Mark will also be forever remembered by his eight grandchildren and many great (and great-great) grandchildren – with one more on the way, as well as other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; his parents, brothers, George, Ken and Warren; as well as nieces and nephews.
