Mary Ellen Chase, age 91, of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2019 at Sanford Sheldon Care Center in Sheldon. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Sheldon. Father Siby Punnoose officiating. Burial to follow at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery in Sheldon. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 30, from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Scriptural Wake Service at 5:00 P.M. and Parish Rosary at 5:15 P.M. Family will be present from 5:30 to 7:00 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Home Sheldon Funeral Service in Sheldon. Mary Ellen Chase, daughter of Neal and Anna (Gallagher) Chase, was born on April 12, 1928, in Petersburg, NE. She moved with her family to Sheldon, IA, in 1931. She attended school in Sheldon, graduating from Sheldon High School in 1946. She then went on to earn her BA in Elementary Education from Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, IA, in 1950. Mary Ellen taught 1st grade in Sheldon and Mason City, IA, before moving to Los Alamos, NM, in 1956. She taught 1st grade in Los Alamos for 29 years, retiring in May of 1985. She moved back to Sheldon after retiring from teaching. Mary Ellen served as an officer in the family business, Neal Chase Lumber Company. Mary Ellen passed away on Friday, April 26, 2019, at Sanford Sheldon Senior Care, reaching the age of 91 years, 14 days. Mary Ellen was an active member of St Patrick Catholic Church in Sheldon and the Ladies Guild. She taught CCD for several years. She was highly involved with the Sheldon All School Reunion, was an officer for Sheldon Historical Society, volunteered at Sheldon Prairie Museum, and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed traveling, reading, playing bridge, bird watching, and flower gardening. She was an avid Notre Dame Football fan. Mary Ellen was a devoted daughter, sister and aunt. She has been a positive influence in many lives and we are all better people for having had her in our lives. Those left to cherish Mary Ellen's memory include nieces and nephews, Jane DeBates, Jeff Weppler, Greg Weppler, Ellen McCabe, Peg Cole, Dan McCabe, Mike McCabe, Bill McCabe, Katie Bean, Pat McCabe, Theresa Peterson, Dennis McCabe, Bob McCabe, and Tom McCabe, and their families. Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, Neal and Anna Chase; a brother, Joe Chase; sister, Betty and her husband, Matt McCabe; sister, Janet Weppler; niece, Mary Janousek; and nephew, Jim McCabe. Mary Ellen's family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Sheldon Sanford Senior Care. Memorials will be directed to St. Patrick Catholic Church.
