Mavis Poppema, age 76, of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at Sanford Sheldon Medical Center in Sheldon. Funeral Services will be Thursday, January 31, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon. Rev. Luke Wynja officiating. Burial to follow at East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon. Visitation will be Thursday, January 31, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon, from 10:00 A.M. to time of service. Mavis Ruth Poppema was born on August 5, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. She was the daughter of Martin and Sylvia (Talsma) Uittenbogaard. She lived her youth in Chicago before moving to a farm by Hartley, IA and later moving to a farm near Sheldon, IA. Mavis attended the Sanborn Christian Grade School and Western Christian High School in Hull, IA, where she graduated. After high school, Mavis worked at Moleman Dairy as a bookkeeper for several years. She was united in marriage to Robert Poppema of Sheldon on October 10, 1961. They lived in Sheldon where they owned and operated Poppema-Sikma Construction. Mavis loved to prepare food and worked as the head cook at the Sheldon Christian Grade School and the Christian Retirement Home, preparing meals for children and residents. After their five children were grown and out on their own, she started Mrs. D's Diner in Sheldon, specializing in soups and pies. Mavis always put her family first and was a very compassionate wife, mother and grandmother. She set an example of love, kindness and respect to her family and friends. She was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon. Mavis passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at Sanford Sheldon Medical Center in Sheldon. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 57 years, Bob; children, Natalie (Joel) Van Ginkel of Hull, IA, Leah (Dan) Heiliger of Archer, IA, Dan (Kathy) Poppema of Sheldon, IA, Mike (Katy) Poppema of Remsen, IA; 28 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Karen Vis of Valley Springs, SD, Donna (Roger) Poppema of Sheldon, IA, Sharon (Steve) Holz of Sheldon, IA; one brother, Marty (Dawn) Uittenbogaard of Sheldon, IA. She was preceded in death by her son, Kenny Poppema; her parents; step-mother, Gretta Uittenbogaard; sister, Glenda Van Wyk; brother-in-law, Marlin Vis.
