STEVEN L. VANDER SLUIS
Steven Lynn Vander Sluis passed away on February 22, 2026, at the age of 71. He died of heart failure and complications from a chronic foot ulcer. Steve was born at Baum Harmon Hospital in Primghar on December 21, 1954. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran in Sutherland. He attended the Sutherland Community Schools, graduating in 1973. He graduated from Iowa State University in Ames in 1978, with a degree in Agronomy and Pest Management. He was a member of the Lutheran fraternity, Beta Sigma Psi.
Steve started his career at the experimental farm outside Sutherland and then took a job with the grain elevator in York, Nebraska. In November of 1986, he joined the United States Department of Agriculture and moved to Plainview, Texas. He worked for the next 38 years as a warehouse grain inspector. He embraced life as a Texan and volunteered as the church treasurer at Trinity Lutheran Church in Plainview. In November of 2021, he moved into the new house he built in Primghar, near the golf course.
Steve was a quiet, self-effacing man, who preferred his own company. He collected stamps and enjoyed reading science fiction and action/adventure novels and playing computer games. He was an ace bridge player and enjoyed playing cards and games with his family and best friend, Larry Dau, and his wife, Jean.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ronald and Phyllis Vander Sluis, and his brother, Gary.
He is survived by two sisters: Jolene—from Omaha, NE; and Rhonda—who lives in Portland, Oregon with her spouse, Cyndi Rosene. Also, by his uncle, Les Douma and wife, Bev; his aunts, Lavonne Vander Sluis and Marlys Den Hartog, and eleven first cousins.
