Verdean Dale Blumeyer, age 87, of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2020 at his home in Sheldon, Iowa. His funeral service will be 10:30 A.M. on Monday, July 13, 2020 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Sheldon with Fr. Siby Punnoose and Fr. Tim Hogan ~ officiating.
Burial will be in the Lyon County First Presbyterian Cemetery near George, Iowa.
Visitation with family present will be from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M. on Sunday, July 12, 2020 at the Va

Knights of Columbus Rosary will be Prayed at 4:00pm on Sunday, July 12, 2020 at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.

The family requests that everyone observes the social distancing guidelines during the visitation and the service at the church with limited seating available for the church service.

Verdean Dale Blumeyer, the son of Chris Harold and Pauline Ida (Walp) Blumeyer was born on August 18, 1932 on a farm near Boyden, Iowa. He attended a country school and graduated from the Boyden High School. Verdean enlisted with the United States Navy in 1952, serving for four years during the Korean Conflict, being discharged with an Honorable Discharge in 1956. Verdean went on to spend four additional years in the Sheldon Army Reserves from 1956-1960. One of the highlights this past year was having the opportunity to go on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.. Verdean was united in marriage to Darlene Louise Beermann on November 29, 1957 in Calumet, Iowa. After their marriage, the couple settled in Sheldon, where they raised their family. His wife Darlene passed away in 1998. Verdean was employed at Big 4 and AGP for 32 years prior to his Retirement. Verdean was united in marriage to Lorna (Lechtenberg) Hatting in 2000. Verdean passed away at his home in Sheldon on July 9, 2020 reaching the age of 87 years, 10 months and 22 days.
Verdean was a member at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Sheldon, the Sheldon Knights of Columbus and the Sheldon American Legion, McGothlen-Cowie Post #145. Verdean also enjoyed helping his friend, Dixon Van Meeteren during the harvest season, which he always looked forward to and going to morning coffee with his friends. Over the years Verdean and Lorna enjoyed wintering in Arizona and Texas, traveling and spending time with his family and friends. Family was very important to him.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 20 years, Lorna; 3 children, Cindy (Matthew) Brown of Ft. Dodge, IA; Doug Blumeyer of Rock Valley, Iowa; Lisa (Ronnie) Daggett of Ft. Dodge, IA; Lorna’s 5 children, Tim (Sheila) Hatting of Hospers, IA; Kathy (Steve) Wells of Houston, TX; Judy Wallace and Marty Stettnichs of Sheldon, IA; Dan (Tammy) Hatting of Sioux Falls, SD and Lori (Jeff) Hoven of Matlock, IA; 25 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild and a sister-in-law, Carolyn Blumeyer of Hastings, Minnesota other relatives and friends.
Verdean was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene, his parents; a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Ade Vander Linden; a grandson, Austin; a great-granddaughter, Faith; 2 brothers, Donald (Fr. Robert) Blumeyer and John Blumeyer; a sister and her husband, Shirley and Clifford Moss and other in-laws.
