Verna Stettnichs 83, of George, Iowa passed away peacefully at her home on February 6, 2023.

Verna Mae (Hassebroek) Stettnichs was born on February 24, 1939. She was the daughter of William F. and Vera (Kruger) Hassebroek. Verna grew up on the family farm NE of George. She attended Grant #4 country school and then went to George High School graduating in 1957.

Verna was united in marriage to Lyle E. Stettnichs on February 24, 1959 in Luverne, Minnesota. They were the parents of six children. After they married they lived in Doon, Rock Rapids and Alvord but settled in their forever home in George. Verna worked as a waitress for many local businesses in George. Her last job was for the George Meat Locker and she very much enjoyed working there. Verna also was a very talented seamstress and made many of her kid’s clothes and sewed for many local people in town even making wedding dresses and suits for several weddings.

She enjoyed gardening and planting flowers in the summer and going for coffee to visit with the local people. Mom never met a stranger she talked to everyone. Mom had a love for animals and felt sorry for every stray cat in the neighborhood and fed them all. She would spend time on her deck watching them and trying to pet them. They brought her a lot of joy. Our Mom was a very devoted mother who always put her kids and family first and many of our friends still call her Mom. She spent many days at the grandkids ballgames and watching them at the swimming pool. She always said housework can wait, kids are only little once so enjoy them. She was witty and sassy and one never knew what she might say. At times you didn’t know whether to laugh or be embarrassed. She definitely was unique and gave us many laughs. We will miss her.

The past few years as her health began to get worse she was unable to get out to enjoy many of these things but enjoyed talking to all her internet friends and family. We had to fix her computer many times and she somehow would get it messed up.

But all in all she did pretty good for someone her age and the new world of technology. She passed away peacefully in her recliner with her favorite kitten on her lap. She is now with Jesus where there is no more pain.

Left to mourn her memory are her children, Scott (Jeannie) Stettnichs of Windsor, MO; David (Sandee) Stettnichs of Rock Rapids, IA; Robin (Neal) Kruckenberg of George, IA; Steven (Shawn) Stettnichs of Urbandale, IA; and Robert Stettnichs of George, IA; along with 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Sister-in-law, Karen Stettnichs of Spencer, IA; and brother-in-law, Delmer Van Houten of Alvord, IA.

Preceding her in death are her parents, William and Vera Hassebroek, husband, Lyle Stettnichs and her son, Mark Stettnichs, 4 brothers Dale, Merril and infants Marlin and Willard and an infant sister, Phidelis.
